Jemima Magor: Emigrant to Pauper’s Grave.
Speaker: Ruth (née Magor) Gates.
Friday 24th September 2021 10:00 - 11:00am. Followed by morning tea.
Venue: Yankalilla Uniting Church Hall, 119 South Road, Yankalilla.
Conditions in UK after the Industrial Revolution led to unemployment on the land, and overcrowding in the cities with resulting poverty, squalor and disease. Jemima Osborne’s family joined hosts of emigrants on free passages to start a new life in the colonies. She arrived in South Australia in 1855 at the age of nine. The family settled in the Yankalilla area and in 1863 Jemima married John Magor (Jnr.) from a neighbouring pioneering family. They worked hard to realise the dream of their parents, but when tragedy struck, Jemima’s life took a very different path.
Please note the venue for this talk has been changed due to Covid restrictions and the association of the Magor family with the Yankalilla Uniting Church.
