Rapid Bay is where the Fleurieu Peninsula's hills drop dramatically to the sea. Around 90 minutes south of Adelaide, this small coastal settlement is known for its towering cliffs, long jetty, beachside camping and some of South Australia's best diving and snorkelling.
The Rapid Bay Jetty is a favourite for fishing, while the waters around the old jetty are internationally recognised as one of the best places to spot South Australia's marine emblem, the leafy sea dragon. Divers and snorkellers can also encounter an impressive variety of temperate marine life beneath the surface.
Back on shore, the beach sits between steep headlands, with opportunities for swimming, kayaking and exploring the coastline. The beach is unpatrolled and the water can deepen quickly, so visitors should always check conditions before entering the water.
For a longer stay, Rapid Bay Campground sits right beside the beach, putting the jetty, cliffs and water within easy reach.
With Second Valley just up the road and Cape Jervis further south, Rapid Bay is an easy stop on a western Fleurieu coastal road trip.
