Protecting Carrickalinga's Night Skies
After three years of community-led advocacy, research and consultation, Carrickalinga on the Fleurieu Peninsula made history in 2024 by becoming Australia's first certified Dark Sky Community. Recognition was awarded by DarkSky International, the world's leading authority on reducing light pollution and protecting the natural night environment.
Nestled beyond the glow of metropolitan Adelaide and sheltered by the Sellicks Hill Range, Carrickalinga is uniquely positioned to retain its dark skies. With only 36 streetlights requiring upgrades to meet Dark Sky standards, the community demonstrated how practical action can preserve one of our most valuable natural assets: the night.
As urbanisation continues to expand, protecting dark skies is becoming increasingly important. Artificial light at night can disrupt wildlife behaviour, migration, feeding and breeding cycles, while also diminishing our connection to the stars and the natural rhythms of the environment.
The Carrickalinga Dark Sky Community initiative was led by the Carrickalinga Community Association in partnership with the District Council of Yankalilla. Together, local volunteers and stakeholders undertook a wide range of activities, including:
- Night sky quality monitoring
- Community information sessions and displays
- Presentations to local government and community groups
- Educational resources and fact sheets
- Lighting policy development
- Media engagement and awareness campaigns
- Public stargazing events and Star Parties
Carrickalinga's achievement demonstrates how communities can work together to create healthier environments for both people and wildlife.
